Capacity Building Workshop

Green Hydrogen: International Experience, Outlook and Practices

In the framework of the #GEIPP, UNIDO organized the workshop “Green Hydrogen in industrial parks: International Experience, Outlook and Best Practices”  to support the Suez Canal Economic Zone (#SCZone) in the development of a new green hydrogen #GH2 ecosystem for industrial parks in #Egypt.

The eco-industrial park (EIP) approach brings an opportunity to strategically plan and effectively manage GH2 in Sokhna to achieve economic, social, and environmental requirements. The concept of EIP is an effective tool to overcome challenges related to inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

In this context, the workshop aimed at raising awareness on GH2 as a renewable and clean energy carrier to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint and create a sustainable and decarbonized future, transfer knowledge on international experiences and best practices, as well as the current and future market for hydrogen. The workshop is also intended to help understand possible applications and economic outlook for GH2 at the level of manufacturing companies and infrastructure, to promote the adoption of this clean energy carrier.

The workshop targeted industrial developers, park managers and industries involved in energy sector, manufacturing and implementing GH2 solutions. It also targeted government authorities and stakeholders responsible for developing and implementing GH2 policies and strategies in SCZone.

This training workshop is the first capacity building activity to support the SCZone to implement the EIP standards in its GH2 production area and improving its sustainability. The support will include developing a roadmap for GH2 ecosystem in the SCZone in Sokhna compatible with EIP principles and criteria. The roadmap will guide SCZone to plan and operate the GH2 ecosystem and set the minimum requirements as per the EIP International Framework. The framework was jointly developed by UNIDO, World Bank and GIZ and is available at: https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/handle/10986/35110.

GEIPP Egypt is implemented under the framework of the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Programme (GEIPP) in Developing and Transition Countries currently, funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (#SECO), and implemented by UNIDO in cooperation with the Ministry of Trade and Industry (#MoTI). The workshop was organized a consulting alliance from Nexsus Analytica (#NexsusAnalytica), Firnas Shuman (#FirnasShuman) and in cooperation with ARIEMA Energia y Medioambiente (Spain).
